Toxic Ingestion Signs

Toxic ingestion is something we see occurring all too often at Twin Peaks Veterinary Center in Tucson. While we will always do everything we can to care for your pet and prevent the toxic substance from causing lasting harm, time is of the essence. The sooner we can treat your pet, the better the outcome.

Of course, we know that much as we try to keep our pets out of harm’s way, we sometimes can’t stop them from eating or drinking something harmful. Unfortunately, we can’t communicate with them verbally to find out exactly what they have ingested or ask them how they are feeling. All pet owners should be able to spot certain signs of toxic ingestion and know to take their four-legged friend to the vet for pet poison treatment if necessary.

Restlessness & Frequent Moving

All pets move around, but if you notice your pet acting unusual and appearing restless or stressed out, it may not be feeling well.

Frequent Urination & Defecation

Have you noticed a sudden change in your pet’s “bathroom” habits? His or her body may be attempting to expel a toxic substance, and it is time to bring your pet to our veterinarians.

Vomiting

While many pets vomit due to minor causes, all vomiting should be taken seriously. This is especially true if your pet does not appear well after the initial vomiting.

Shaking & Shivering

This could be an early sign of your pet’s body starting to go into shock.

Swelling

Any swelling in your pet’s face or other parts of the body is cause for concern. The animal should be assessed by a veterinarian.

Lethargy & Unresponsiveness

Certain toxic substances may cause your pet to act more lethargic than anxious. If your pet is unresponsive, get emergency veterinary care immediately.
