Dog Vaccinations

When someone makes the decision to own a pet, this comes with a tremendous amount of responsibility. It is important for every pet to receive regular care from a trained veterinarian. This will give the veterinary team a chance to make sure the animal is growing and developing appropriately. One of the topics that will be discussed at these visits is that of vaccinations. This is an important part of making sure that all dogs stay healthy. The team from Twin Peaks Veterinary Center is here to help everyone in the Tucson Arizona area understand why vaccines are so important.

It is important for every dog owner to make sure that his or her dog receives its shots on a regular basis. How do Vaccines Work?

Vaccines are important for both people and animals. These shots are used to train the body’s immune system to guard against potentially dangerous infections. When the body is exposed to an infection, it develops antibodies that are used to combat these dangerous infections in the future. The idea behind a vaccine is to train the immune system to fight infection before it ever sees the infection for real. In this sense, the body gets to practice against the infection, developing a plan of attack if it ever sees that infection again. In addition to guarding the recipient against the infection, vaccines also protect the community as a whole through something called herd immunity. Which is when enough of the community is vaccinated that the virus responsible for the disease is no longer able to be transmitted and therefore even protects the animals that cannot be vaccinated. This makes vaccines very important.

What Are Some Examples of Vaccines?

Vaccines are used in both people and animals. Some of the common vaccines that people get include measles, mumps, and rubella. Dogs also get vaccines. Some of the common examples include kennel cough and rabies. Sometimes, these vaccines are given in a series. These vaccines will prevent dogs from getting these infections in the future, helping them live long, happy, and healthy lives. When it comes to vaccines, it is important for every pet owner to listen to the guidance of his or her veterinarian and receive these shots on time.
