The Importance of Vaccinating Your Pet

The Importance of Vaccinating Your Pet

There are many ways to be a responsible pet owner, and preventative medicine is one of the most important ones. A big part of keeping your pet healthy is getting regular vaccinations against dangerous and deadly diseases. At Twin Peaks Veterinary Center, we recommend that all of our patients come in for an annual comprehensive wellness exam, and that includes all the required vaccinations needed for each pet.

How Vaccinations Help Your Pet

Each vaccination is made up of a group of chemicals that encourages your pet’s immune system to build up antibodies against a certain deadly disease. The vaccination itself doesn’t keep your pet healthy, but it helps your pet’s body to get stronger on its own. It’s important for all pets to be vaccinated, even if they never go outdoors. Insects can bite infected animals, then go on to bite and infect your pet, so vaccines are the only successful line of defense against common serious and deadly diseases.

What Vaccines Does My Pet Need?

The right vaccine combination depends on your pet, its normal environment, and its lifestyle. Vaccines come in both core and non-core varieties, with the core ones being appropriate for all animals. Depending on where your pet spends time, we may advise certain non-core vaccinations, as well.

The core dog vaccinations we give to every pet are for rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and adenovirus. We may also advise vaccines against bordetella for dogs that are boarded in kennels, or vaccines against Lyme disease for those dogs living in wooded areas.

Core cat vaccinations include feline distemper, rabies, feline herpesvirus, and calicivirus. Non-core options include bordetella and feline leukemia virus vaccines.
